The word “Hospice” means “a place of shelter for travelers on a difficult journey.”
Hospice Care is a team-oriented approach to expert medical care and pain management. Hospice philosophy is based on the belief that patients have the right to die with dignity and without pain, while enjoying the highest quality of life possible. The focus is not on curative measures, but rather relief of symptoms. The patient and family are encouraged to participate in planning and performing the care, to the extent that they wish to do so. The Hospice team is there to care, instruct, educate and support the family.
Hospice Care is provided in many settings. While usually offered in the patient’s home, care can be performed in group homes, nursing homes, hospitals and free standing hospice facilities.
